Years after the internet hype more and more people recognize the benefits of the internet as source of information and procurement. Over the course of time in Germany there are about 53 percent of the population online (1998: 8%**) (Fig. 1). The internet has grown up to a mass medium.
While in 2001 only 30% of the German population in the age between 50 and 60 have used the internet, in 2004 it is more than 60% of the male population*** (Fig. 2).
The business relevance of the internet is rapidly growing. At this stage in Germany we have an online revenue of 223€ per private customer. In 2004 a total revenue of 18 Billion Euros is expected only in Germany.
The revenues in the business-to-business sector is growing even faster. Here the online sales volume has reached about 200 Billion Euros today. In 2007 this number is expected to increase to about 730 Billion Euros. This would be about 50 times as much as during the times of the internet hype.
In summary, after the establishment of technological internet standards at the turn of the millennium today we can also post a rapid growth of the necessary number of users – your prospective customers!
